Location

Masterton is conveniently located equidistant from New Zealand's capital city of Wellington (by train or by car) and Palmerston North. From Wellington you can take the Interislander Ferry (to the South Island) or fly from Wellington International Airport. Two hours north of Masterton are art deco Napier and Hastings.

Masterton is the largest town in Wairarapa region (with a population of approximately 20,000). It is situated in the heart of the Wairarapa, between the Tararua mountain range and the Pacific Ocean.

Traditionally, Masterton has been a service centre for farmers, but these days its proximity to the Wairarapa wine industry is gradually changing the character of the town. Its special claim to fame is the annual Golden Shears shearing competition, which attracts top shearers from all over the country every March.
